Summary

Indiana created an Artificial Intelligence Task Force as a temporary task force serving the General Assembly (IC 2-5-53.7). It has fifteen members, including legislators, the state chief information officer and chief data officer, and gubernatorial appointees with AI, ethics, law-enforcement, legal-rights and cloud expertise. The task force studies AI technology used, developed or considered by state agencies and recommendations from other bodies on AI in government, assesses benefits and risks to agencies and effects on residents' rights, privacy, employment and economic welfare, and reports with recommendations by October 31 each year. A separate chapter (IC 4-13.1-5) provides that each executive and legislative branch agency may compile, by November 1, 2025, an inventory of the AI technologies it uses or is considering, covering the vendor, purpose, whether the system informs or makes decisions without human intervention, data used, security, benefits and risks, costs, independent testing and bias evaluation. The act also sets cybersecurity policy and assessment provisions for public entities. Both AI chapters expire on December 31, 2027.
