Summary

Tennessee requires the University of Tennessee board of trustees, the board of regents, each state university board, each local board of education and the governing body of each public charter school to adopt a policy on the use of artificial intelligence by students, faculty or teachers, and staff for instructional and assignment purposes. School districts and charter schools had to implement their policies for the 2024-2025 school year and report compliance, with the policy and how it will be enforced, to the Department of Education by July 1 each year. Higher education boards had to implement, post and submit their policies to the legislature's education committee chairs by July 1, 2025, or appear before the joint government operations committee. The act defines AI as a machine-based system that makes predictions, recommendations or decisions for human-defined objectives.
