Summary
The Authors Guild and named authors, including John Grisham, Jodi Picoult, David Baldacci and George R.R. Martin, filed this proposed class action on September 19, 2023, in the Southern District of New York. They allege that OpenAI and Microsoft infringed authors' copyrights by copying books to train the GPT large language models. On April 3, 2025, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation centralized it with the other author class actions and the news-publisher suits before Judge Sidney H. Stein (MDL No. 3143), where the author cases proceed as one consolidated class case. Fact and expert discovery closed in summer 2026. On September 4, 2026, the class plaintiffs moved for summary judgment that the defendants infringed and that fair use does not apply, and the defendants filed their own summary judgment motions. The claims remain allegations: no ruling on liability or fair use, and no class certification order, was found.
