Summary
Music publishers led by Concord, Universal Music and ABKCO sued Anthropic in October 2023, alleging that it copied lyrics to about 500 songs to train its Claude models and that Claude reproduces those lyrics, and asserting direct and secondary copyright infringement and removal of copyright management information. The case was transferred from Tennessee to the Northern District of California in 2024. In 2025 the court denied a preliminary injunction over training uses (Anthropic had stipulated to keep output guardrails) and dismissed the secondary-infringement and CMI claims with leave to amend. As of October 2026 the parties' cross-motions for summary judgment and expert-exclusion motions are pending. The claims are allegations.
