Summary

A policy of the Governor's Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) that sets minimum standards for the use of AI across Nevada's executive branch, effective November 26, 2024. All state agencies must meet it as a minimum and may adopt stricter policies; agency policies go to the State Technology Governance Committee for review each year before July 1, and where an agency policy conflicts with the statewide policy the more stringent one prevails. It sets principles (fairness, privacy, safety and security, validity, transparency and human oversight), gives examples of permitted, approval-required and prohibited uses (generating official reports needs approval), requires human review of critical AI decisions, mandatory safety training for staff working on AI operations, reporting of AI-related incidents and participation in audits, and an annual review of the policy. Governor Joe Lombardo announced it in December 2024. It is an executive policy, not a statute or executive order.
