Summary
California AB 2013 (Chapter 817, Statutes of 2024) requires developers of generative AI systems or services made available to Californians, including systems first released or substantially modified on or after January 1, 2022, to post on their websites a high-level summary of the data used for training. The summary covers sources and owners of the datasets, data types and volume, intellectual-property status, whether personal information or synthetic data was used, and processing methods. Narrow exemptions cover security, aircraft operation and federal national-security uses. The statute names no specific enforcement procedure or penalty. A federal court denied xAI's request for a preliminary injunction in March 2026.
