Summary
Universal (UMG Recordings, Capitol), Sony Music Entertainment and Warner label entities sued Suno, Inc. in the District of Massachusetts on June 24, 2024, alleging that Suno copied their sound recordings without a license to train its AI music generator. Warner settled with Suno in November 2025 and entered a licensing partnership. UMG and Sony's claims continue before Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV and are near the end of fact discovery. In 2026 a magistrate judge refused to order Suno to produce its Warner settlement. In August 2026 Judge Saylor allowed a DMCA anti-circumvention claim to be added but refused to add about 61,000 more works to this case. UMG and Sony then filed a second suit on September 18, 2026, covering about 60,000 additional works, and the parties proposed moving dispositive motions to June 2027. Fair use has not been decided. The claims are allegations.
