Snapchat and AI content
What Snapchat says about AI-made and altered content, quoted from its own pages: disclosure, labels, Content Credentials, uploaded files and reach.
Disclosure and labels
- When you must discloseWhat the platform requires of the person posting.
Snap says some regions require users to disclose or label AI-generated content and that users are responsible for meeting those requirements. Its Creator Monetization Policy says content made with AI-based tools is monetizable if it is original, entertaining or informative, not misleading, and the use of AI is disclosed somewhere in the content or creator profile. Its terms bar presenting outputs of Snap's AI features as human-generated or removing Snap's watermarks or disclosures.
Advertisers can self-declare AI-generated or AI-modified media through the Ads API. Snap does not name the regions.
Quoted passage Overview, generative AI paragraph
On Spotlight and Discover, our content recommendation algorithms prioritize authentic content . Some regions require users to clearly disclose or label AI-generated content. You are responsible for ensuring your use and sharing of synthetic media meets the transparency requirements in your region. We reserve the right to take appropriate enforcement action against accounts that use AI to violate our Community Guidelines, abuse our AI products, or violate local laws. Our enforcement actions can include termination of an account.
Quoted passage Monetizable content; Not Monetizable
Content that leverages sophisticated editing or AI-based tools is monetizable—if it is original, entertaining, or informative, not misleading, and if the use of AI is disclosed anywhere in the content or creator profile. Not Monetizable: This is a non-exhaustive list of content that is not monetizable." "You frequently publish inauthentic content that misleads people (even if the subject matter is not as “serious” as politics, health, or tragic events)." "Deceptively manipulated media, including content that has been generated or enhanced with the use of AI tools to manipulate users (for example, editing an image of someone’s body or face to imply a radical transformation, or editing a snake to appear to be as large as a bus, editing to cause confusion to a user, etc.)

Quoted passage Snap Inc. Terms of Service, 6. AI Features

Quoted passage Media attributes table; Create Media
The attribute ai_content_source along with the value USER_AI_GEN can be set by users to self-declare if the Media contains AI-generated or AI modified content. The value SNAP_AI_GENERATED will be applied if the media was generated by a Snap AI workflow, such as Image-to-Video, this value cannot be set via the API, it’s only applied automatically by Snap services.
- Automatic labelsWhich signals the platform says it reads to label content itself.
Snapchat says it may mark its own generative AI features with a sparkle icon, disclaimers, Context Cards or tool tips, may add a Context Card when some AI-generated images are shared, and may add a Snap Ghost with sparkles watermark when they are exported. It says not all AI-generated images carry these marks and that images made with non-Snap products may not be labeled as AI-generated.
Snap does not say which signals, if any, it reads from uploads made with other tools. In ads, Snap sets an AI-generated attribute automatically for media from its own AI workflows.
Quoted passage How can I recognize generative AI tools on Snapchat?
We may indicate that a feature in Snapchat is powered by generative AI in a number of ways, including using the sparkle icon , specific disclaimers, Context Cards , or tool tips. […] When some AI generated images are shared with you on Snapchat, we may include a Context Card to let you know that the image was created with a generative AI-powered feature.
Quoted passage What is the Snap Ghost with sparkles watermark?
Some generative AI-powered features, like AI Snaps , allow you to create or edit images. When you export or save a generated image to Camera Roll, a watermark of a Snap Ghost with sparkles may be added to those images. The purpose of these watermarks is to provide transparency that the image was created with generative AI and is not real or based on real events, even if it is a realistic style.
Quoted passage What is the Snap Ghost with sparkles watermark?, note
Please Note : Not all AI generated images will include a Context Card or watermark. Images created with non-Snap products may not be labeled as AI generated.
