Disclosure and labels

When you must discloseWhat the platform requires of the person posting.

Meta requires people to disclose, with its AI-disclosure tool, organic photorealistic video or realistic-sounding audio that was digitally created or altered, including with AI, and says it may apply penalties if they do not. Images do not need a label but may still be labeled when Meta detects AI.

Meta's pages differ in strength: its Help Center says Facebook, Instagram and Threads "may require" an AI label, while its Community Standard and Instagram's help page say they require one. Instagram also offers an "AI-generated profile" label.

Label AI content on InstagramMeta (Instagram Help Center)

Quoted passage When the AI content label is required; How to label
Meta requires you to label content you share that has photorealistic video or realistic-sounding audio that has been digitally generated or altered, including with AI." "Meta does not require you to label images that have been created or altered with AI. Images will still receive a label if Meta’s systems detect they were AI-generated." "Note: There may be penalties if you do not label content as required." "When you label your content, people will see an AI content label on your post. When you label your profile, people will see an AI-generated profile label on your profile and alongside your content if your specific media doesn’t already have a label indicating that it was created or edited with AI." "Note: If you choose not to identify AI use in the content you share, an AI content label may be applied if Meta detects that your content was AI-generated or AI-edited." Misinformation (Community Standards)Meta (Transparency Center)

Quoted passage Policy details
We require people to disclose, using our AI-disclosure tool, whenever they post organic content with photorealistic video or realistic-sounding audio that was digitally created or altered, and we may apply penalties if they fail to do so. We may also add a label to certain digitally created or altered content that creates a particularly high risk of misleading people on a matter of public importance.

How to identify AI content on Meta productsMeta (Meta Help Center)

Quoted passage When the AI content label may be required
On Facebook, Instagram and Threads, Meta may require an AI label when content has photorealistic video or realistic-sounding audio that was digitally created, modified or altered, including with AI. This requirement does not apply to images. However, images may still receive a label if the systems detect that they were AI-generated or if they were modified using AI." "Note: There may be penalties for content shared without a label when it is required.

How Meta Is Preparing for the 2026 US Midterm ElectionsMeta (Meta Newsroom)

Quoted passage Identifying AI-Generated Content Beyond Political Ads
We use a combination of industry standards and technology (such as C2PA ) to help identify content generated or edited using AI outside of ads on our platforms, and label it to promote transparency. We display an “AI info” label for content we detect was generated by an AI tool, and share whether the content is labeled because of industry-shared signals or because someone self-disclosed. We require people to use this disclosure and label tool when they post organic content with a photorealistic video or realistic-sounding audio that was digitally created or altered, and we may apply penalties if they fail to do so.
Automatic labelsWhich signals the platform says it reads to label content itself.

Meta's Help Center says its systems read industry-standard AI signals to decide whether to label content, and its February 2026 newsroom text names C2PA as an example; in February 2024 Meta said it was building tools to read the "AI generated" information in the C2PA and IPTC standards. Meta labels content it detects was generated with AI, and renamed its "Made with AI" label "AI info" on July 1, 2024. Instagram says Meta AI content shared directly may be labeled above or on the content, some with a visible "Imagined with AI" watermark, and that content with AI signals from third-party tools is labeled.

Meta's pages name the label differently: its Help Center calls it "AI content", while its newsroom and Transparency Center call it "AI info". Meta does not say it reads other companies' invisible watermarks.

How labels appearThe wording of the label and where viewers see it.

Since September 2024 Meta shows the label on content it detects was generated by AI, and in the post's menu for content only modified or edited with AI tools, saying whether the label comes from industry-shared signals or self-disclosure. Meta may place a label on the face of content with a particularly high risk of materially deceiving the public on a matter of public importance. Instagram says Meta AI content shared directly may be labeled above or on the content.

On ad images made or significantly edited with AI tools, "AI info" appears on the "About this ad" screen and sometimes next to "Sponsored". Not all ads carry it: Meta's tools are rolling out gradually, minor changes such as resizing or color correction are not labeled, and label names vary by region.

Content CredentialsWhether the platform shows or keeps the signed record.

Not stated. None of Instagram's pages listed under Sources read says so.

Meta reads C2PA signals to apply labels, but does not say it shows Content Credentials, such as the signer or edit history, to viewers, or keeps them in files it serves or lets people download.

What happens to uploaded files

ImagesWhat the platform says about metadata, credentials and re-encoding.

Meta says its systems read industry-standard AI signals in uploaded images, including signals added by photo editors that use AI to resize or recolor. In February 2024 it named the "AI generated" information in the C2PA and IPTC standards as the signals it would read.

Meta points users to a "Meta AI Detection tool" to check photos and videos. It does not say whether it keeps or strips metadata in the images it serves.

Reach and enforcement

Reach and eligibilityWhat the platform itself says about recommendation, reach or earnings for AI content.

In April 2024 Meta said that when its independent fact-checkers rate AI-generated content False or Altered, it shows the content lower in Feed and adds an overlay label. Meta's Misinformation Community Standard, as read on October 19, 2026, says third-party fact-checkers review the most viral content outside the United States, and that Community Notes, beginning in the United States, lets people add context to potentially misleading posts.

Meta states no effect of its AI label itself on reach, recommendation or monetization. Its Partner Monetisation Policies page says nothing about AI-generated or AI-labeled content; its Content Monetization Policies page could not be read.

Our Approach to Labeling AI-Generated Content and Manipulated MediaMeta (Meta Newsroom)

Quoted passage Fact-checking paragraph
We also have a network of nearly 100 independent fact-checkers who will continue to review false and misleading AI-generated content. When fact-checkers rate content as False or Altered, we show it lower in Feed so fewer people see it, and add an overlay label with additional information.

Misinformation (Community Standards)Meta (Transparency Center)

Quoted passage Policy rationale (fact-checking and Community Notes paragraph)
As part of that effort, outside of the United States we partner with third-party fact checking organizations in many parts of the world to review and rate the accuracy of the most viral content on our platforms (see here and here for our approach in the United States). Beginning in the United States, the Community Notes program lets people add more context to Facebook, Instagram and Threads posts that are potentially misleading or confusing (see here).

Partner Monetisation PoliciesMeta (Meta Business Help Centre)

Quoted passage Share original content
Content creators, publishers and third-party providers can only monetise content that they created or were involved in the creation of, or that directly features the creator, publisher or third-party provider. Content that is unoriginal or reproduced without making meaningful enhancements (commentary, parody, creative editing etc.) cannot be monetised.
If you do not discloseWhat the platform says it may do.

Meta says it may apply penalties when people fail to disclose content that requires it, and may label, or reject as an ad, digitally created or altered content with a particularly high risk of deceiving the public on a matter of public importance. In April 2024 Meta said it would keep AI-generated and manipulated content up with labels unless it otherwise breaks its policies, and would stop removing content solely under its manipulated video policy in July 2024.
