Summary
Mexico has no general AI law. Several initiatives are pending, among them the Ley Nacional para Regular el Uso de la Inteligencia Artificial, filed in the Senate on February 11, 2026, by Senator Karina Isabel Ruiz Ruiz (Morena) and referred to committees. It would cover public and private AI use with human-rights guarantees, impose data-protection and risk duties on providers, and create an AI regulatory agency with sanctions up to market withdrawal. Separately, Congress passed a reform of the Federal Labor Law and the Federal Copyright Law requiring express consent and payment before a performer's voice or image is reproduced with AI; the Senate approved it on April 15, 2026, and the decree was published in the Official Gazette (DOF) on May 14, 2026.
