Summary
The EU AI Act applies directly in France, but France missed the August 2, 2025, deadline to designate its national authorities. The economy ministry's September 2025 draft scheme spread supervision across existing regulators, with the DGCCRF and the DGE coordinating. The designations are now in the bill adapting French law to EU law (DDADUE), which the Senate adopted on February 18, 2026, with government amendments. In that text the CNIL becomes the central AI regulator: it supervises the prohibited practices, most Annex III high-risk uses and some transparency duties, can act as a notified body, and can fine up to EUR 35 million or 7% of worldwide turnover. About fifteen sectoral bodies keep their domains, including the ACPR for financial institutions; the DGCCRF and DGE coordinate, with ANSSI technical support. The bill went to the National Assembly on February 20, 2026, and had not been adopted there as of mid-October 2026.
