Summary

Signed on June 2, 2026, this executive order on AI-driven cyber defense and frontier-model security has three main parts. First, within 30 days, national security, Department of War and civilian federal systems must prioritize cyber defense; CISA must issue Binding Operational Directives and guidance; and Treasury, working with NSA, CISA and the National Cyber Director, must form a voluntary AI cybersecurity clearinghouse with industry and critical-infrastructure operators to find and patch software vulnerabilities. Second, within 60 days, Treasury, NSA and CISA must build a classified benchmark that decides which AI models count as 'covered frontier models', and design a voluntary framework under which developers can give the government access to such models before release. The order states that it creates no mandatory licensing, preclearance or permitting requirement for AI models. Third, the Attorney General must prioritize prosecution of AI-enabled computer crime. The order names community banks among the critical-infrastructure operators that may be given access to AI cybersecurity tools.
