Summary

On February 17, 2026, NIST's Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) launched the AI Agent Standards Initiative to support confident adoption of AI agents that act autonomously. Working with NIST's Information Technology Laboratory and the National Science Foundation, the initiative has three pillars: facilitating industry-led agent standards and U.S. leadership in international standards bodies, fostering community-led open-source agent protocols, and research on agent security and identity. Early inputs included a request for information on AI agent security (comments due March 9), a concept paper on agent identity and authorization (due April 2) and listening sessions on barriers to AI adoption in healthcare, finance and education. The work is voluntary and creates no obligations. NIST's page now sits under the renamed Center for Advancing Innovation and Standards for Super Intelligence.
