Summary
During morning drop-off, within two blocks of a Santa Monica elementary school, a child ran across the street from behind a double-parked SUV and was struck by a driverless Waymo vehicle operating on its fifth-generation automated driving system, with no safety operator aboard. Waymo reported minor injuries and said the vehicle braked from about 17 mph to under 6 mph before contact. NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation opened Preliminary Evaluation PE26-001, covering an estimated 3,067 vehicles, to examine whether the vehicle exercised appropriate caution near a school at drop-off time, including speed-limit adherence and post-impact response. The NTSB said it would also investigate.
