Pinterest and AI content
What Pinterest says about AI-made and altered content, quoted from its own pages: disclosure, labels, Content Credentials, uploaded files and reach.
Disclosure and labels
- When you must discloseWhat the platform requires of the person posting.
Pinterest states no general disclosure duty. Its Pin creation steps include a "Mark as AI-Modified" step to show whether content was made completely or partly with AI or includes an AI-generated person, and its ad creation steps ask advertisers to mark, if applicable, whether an ad is AI-modified or contains an AI-generated person.
Neither page says marking is mandatory or what follows if it is skipped. Pinterest's Community Guidelines apply to synthetic content and prohibit AI-made content that shows someone doing or saying something they did not, with the clear intent of influencing public sentiment about a political figure or election.

Quoted passage Content safety (introduction); Civic participation misinformation
We may remove, limit, or block the distribution of such content and the accounts, individuals, groups and domains that create or spread it based on how much harm it poses. Our policies apply to everyone and to all types of content, including synthetically generated content. […] Fabricated or manipulated content (e.g. content generated with AI tools) making someone appear to do or say something they didn't with the clear intent of influencing public sentiment about a political figure and/or election.
- Automatic labelsWhich signals the platform says it reads to label content itself.
Pinterest says it adds an "AI modified" label when it detects, from a Pin's metadata following the IPTC Metadata Standard or with classifiers that work without obvious markers, that the Pin may have been generated or modified with AI, or when the owner says so. It announced the global rollout of the label on image Pins on April 30, 2025, with an appeals system.
Pinterest's pages differ in detail. Its "AI at Pinterest" page ties detection to the IPTC standard only; its help and policy pages add classifiers. None names C2PA or invisible watermarks. Labels are described for image Pins.

Quoted passage AI labels on Pins, paragraph 2
To do this, we not only analyze a Pin’s metadata following the IPTC Metadata Standard , but also developed classifiers that automatically detect Gen AI content, even if the content doesn’t have obvious markers.
Quoted passage AI labels on Pins, paragraph 3
In addition, some Pins may also have the AI modified label if the content owner indicated that the Pin was generated or modified using AI.
Quoted passage Generative AI and labeling; Generative AI and safety on Pinterest

Quoted passage Introducing Gen AI labels on Pinterest; Giving Pinterest users more control

To do this, we not only analyze an image’s metadata, but also developed classifiers that automatically detect Gen AI content, even if the content doesn’t have obvious markers. […] However, we know these systems aren’t perfect. This is why we set up an appeals system for creators and users who believe that their content may be mislabeled." "This is why we will soon launch an experiment allowing users to select a “see fewer” option on Gen AI Pins for certain categories prone to AI modification or generation, such as beauty and art and will continue expanding into more areas. This option will be found in the three dot overflow menu on the bottom right of a Pin. This will send a signal to our systems to recommend less of this type of content.

Now, when we detect that organic Pins may have been generated or modified using GenAI, users will see an ‘AI modified’ label in the bottom left-hand corner in close-up view. - How labels appearThe wording of the label and where viewers see it.
Pinterest says the "AI modified" label shows at the bottom left of the close-up view of an image Pin that is not promoted. On ads, the label sits with the ad details behind the ellipsis icon and says the Pin was modified with AI or contains an AI-generated person, as the owner indicated, or that it may be modified with AI, if Pinterest's systems flagged it.

On April 30, 2025 Pinterest announced an experiment letting users choose to see fewer GenAI Pins in categories such as beauty and art, which signals its systems to recommend less of that content. Its Community Guidelines allow it to remove, limit or block distribution of violating content.
Pinterest does not say that the AI modified label itself reduces a creator's reach or ad eligibility. Its creator FAQ says its algorithms prioritize inspirational, actionable and relevant content.
