Summary
Canada has no binding federal AI law. The Artificial Intelligence and Data Act was part of Bill C-27, which died at committee stage when the parliamentary session ended on January 6, 2025. On June 4, 2026, the Prime Minister launched AI for All, a national strategy built on trust, opportunity and sovereignty; it aims to raise AI adoption from just over 12% to 60% by 2034 and promises new legislation over five years, including stronger privacy protection and AI transparency. The 2023 Voluntary Code of Conduct asks signatories developing or operating advanced generative AI systems to work toward accountability, safety, fairness and equity, transparency, human oversight and monitoring, and validity and robustness. Bill C-36, which would enact a Protecting Privacy and Consumer Data Act, was introduced on June 15, 2026, and is at second reading.
