Summary
ICD 505, signed by Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines on January 17, 2025, sets policy on the governance and management of AI developed, acquired or used by or for the Intelligence Community. It requires the DNI to designate an IC Chief AI Officer to set the IC's strategic direction on AI and establish governance practices for responsible and ethical AI, and it includes safeguards such as adherence to IC AI ethics guidance. A later technical amendment conformed the directive to January 2025 executive orders on diversity programmes (including EO 14148); the amendment's date is not legible in the copy read. The directive applies to IC elements, not private entities.
