Summary
On Tuesday, June 3, 2025, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced that the U.S. AI Safety Institute at NIST would become the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI), with more emphasis on commercial AI while continuing evaluations of security risks. NIST's page, now titled Center for Advancing Innovation and Standards for Super Intelligence (CAISSI), describes the center as industry's main government point of contact for testing and collaborative research, working on voluntary standards and voluntary agreements with developers, and focusing evaluations on demonstrable risks such as cybersecurity, biosecurity and chemical weapons. The renaming follows Executive Order 14434 (September 29, 2026), which directs agencies to use 'Super Intelligence' in place of 'Artificial Intelligence'. CAISI has published research including a December 2025 write-up on AI models cheating on agent evaluations.
