Full profile

For an organization whose close already runs on SAP software, the practical question is which of SAP’s AI features to enable and what to rely on. This profile covers three parts of SAP’s portfolio: SAP Advanced Financial Closing (close task orchestration), group reporting in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition (consolidation and intercompany), and the Joule assistant and finance agents that SAP documents for the close. It does not cover SAP’s planning, treasury, tax or accounts payable and receivable products except where a close agent depends on them. In the terms of What We Mean by AI, these are mostly AI built into finance platforms, several of them AI agents that prepare or take actions, alongside long-standing rules-based automation.

Which AI this covers: AI built into SAP’s finance platform, as SAP documents it: generative features, agents and established machine learning or matching automation. It does not cover general-purpose assistants a team might use alongside SAP. See What We Mean by AI.

At a glance

SAP’s user guide describes Advanced Financial Closing as supporting the planning, processing, monitoring and analysis of closing tasks for the entities of a group, where activities recur, involve multiple responsible parties, follow a fixed sequence and need documented status. Group reporting in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, as SAP describes it, supports the computation, creation and disclosure of consolidated reports.

Vendor-stated capabilities

Everything in this section is SAP’s own description, from SAP Help Portal documentation and release notes and from SAP’s product page.

Close task management: SAP Advanced Financial Closing

  • Task orchestration. SAP’s product page describes planning and orchestrating the close with automation, best-practice entity close content, job execution across the system landscape and critical-path analysis.
  • Processing and audit trail. The Process Closing Tasks app processes, schedules or automates tasks, updates job status automatically and logs all actions to provide an audit trail.
  • Approvals. Tasks can be subject to dual control, approved by a user other than the one who processed them; the approval type is set per task, and under "Completed Approval Required" successor tasks wait for approval.
  • Change log. A Change Log app shows what changed in templates, task lists and tasks, by whom and when.
  • Reconciliation through partner products. SAP’s product page lists SAP Account Substantiation and Automation by BlackLine and SAP Accounting Automation by BlackLine among products frequently purchased with Advanced Financial Closing, alongside SAP S/4HANA Finance for group reporting.

Consolidation and intercompany: group reporting in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition

  • Consolidation process. Data from consolidation units is read from the universal journal or uploaded for non-SAP systems, standardized in the Data Monitor, and consolidated in the Consolidation Monitor, which runs interunit eliminations and data validation; reconciliation and currency translation reports support cross-checks.
  • Data collection and analytics. Group reporting integrates with SAP Group Reporting Data Collection and with SAP Analytics Cloud through live data connections.
  • Intercompany matching and reconciliation. SAP describes this as built into SAP S/4HANA Cloud, matching transactions and reconciling in real time based on rules the customer defines, with in-app communication and workflow. In the CoE taxonomy this is rules-based automation rather than generative AI.
  • Group financial statements review. The Group Financial Statements Review Booklet app displays, analyzes and validates group reporting data, and lists AI-assisted analytical business insights among its features.

AI features

The finance agents below appear in SAP’s Finance Agents release notes, each listed with the lifecycle status "Restricted Availability"; the documentation read does not define that term. Agent prerequisites include setting up Joule, integrating it with SAP S/4HANA Cloud, and activating the agent in SAP for Me, and SAP states that available capabilities depend on which agents are configured and authorized in the customer’s system. The kind of AI, the suggests-or-acts column and the who-controls-it column are CoE classifications of SAP’s descriptions, not SAP’s labels.

On configuration, SAP’s Joule documentation states that IT and developers can build, configure and operate custom agents, and that conversation history, analytics, feedback and data management are captured to provide auditability. For code-based Joule agents that customers build, SAP’s development guide lists a base model and an advanced model as required configuration properties, chosen from listed model identifiers that include gpt-4o, gpt-4o-mini, a Mistral AI model and an Anthropic model, followed by "etc." The documentation read does not say which models SAP’s own finance agents use. SAP also lists automatic updates as a Joule feature: Joule is updated whenever capabilities are added or changed.

Subprocessors. SAP’s Trust Center states that SAP maintains product- and service-specific subprocessor lists that give the location and country of each subprocessor, that customers can access them through SAP Trust Center, and that customers can subscribe to notifications of changes.

What the company’s SEC filings disclose

SAP’s annual report on Form 20-F is a filing with the SEC, and the statements in it are SAP’s own, made under securities-law disclosure obligations; they describe strategy and risk, not product performance.

  • Business and AI strategy. SAP reports in its Form 20-F for 2025 that its financial management suite spans planning and analysis, the financial close, quote-to-cash, treasury and working capital, tax and trade, and governance, risk and compliance. SAP describes Joule in the filing as its AI user experience layer and Joule Agents as AI systems that autonomously plan and execute workflows. It reports that Joule navigates applications, executes transactions and orchestrates prebuilt and custom agents, and that SAP released 30 Joule Agents in 2025. It reports that Joule Studio, part of SAP Build, lets users build custom Joule agents and skills. It states that it will focus more strongly on AI in 2026, including deploying Joule as the AI user experience for every user and embedding agentic AI into end-to-end business processes. SAP reports that more than two-thirds of its cloud order entry in the fourth quarter of 2025 contained SAP Business AI. That is a sales measure, not evidence of use or results in the close.
  • AI risk factors. SAP warns that AI algorithms or training methods may be flawed, that data sets may be insufficient or biased, that products may not work as intended, and that human review of certain outputs may be required, which could introduce error or inefficiency. It states that it may be held liable for legal violations of third-party AI technology it uses without full recourse, and it cites unintended usage or customization of its AI solutions by customers and partners as a reputational risk.
  • Product and security risk factors. SAP states that its technology and products may experience undetected defects, coding or configuration errors, may not integrate as expected, or may not meet customer expectations, and lists among its risk areas the inability of algorithms to correctly adapt to evolving circumstances, which may lead to adverse decision-making processes in the context of AI-related technologies. It states that cybersecurity attacks, breaches and vulnerabilities in its or its partners’ infrastructure or services could materially affect its operations, products and service delivery, and that SAP and certain of its partners have experienced and expect to continue to experience cyberattacks and other security incidents, none of which it is aware of having had a material impact on its business.
  • A holding in a covered vendor. SAP’s 2025 annual report lists FloQast, Inc. among its equity investments with ownership of at least 5%. FloQast is a close management vendor that CoE | Vendor Intelligence also profiles.

Independent market evidence

  • Analyst placements. None are reported here; no analyst’s own public page was read for this profile.
  • Regulator or standards-body mentions. No regulator or standards-body publication concerning these SAP products was identified in the sources read for this profile.

Independently verified outcomes

No independently verified outcomes were found. SAP’s annual report, its Help Portal documentation and release notes for the products covered, and its product page were checked; the product page presents customer stories, which are vendor-stated, and no independent study or audit of outcomes from SAP’s close or consolidation agents was found.

Pricing and packaging

SAP publishes a list price for SAP Advanced Financial Closing on the product’s page. SAP’s published pricing, October 2026, lists SAP Advanced Financial Closing (public cloud subscription) at a monthly price of USD 4,957.00 for each block of 25 Objects, with a contract duration of 3 to 36 months and automatic renewal. SAP defines an Object as a data object representing any physical object managed through the cloud service, lists one production tenant for the product and a production tenant of SAP Business Technology Platform, if the customer does not already have one, as included, and pro-rates the yearly price monthly for contracts shorter than a year. SAP’s pricing data also lists a qualifying SAP subscription, such as SAP Finance Base or SAP Cloud ERP Private, as a prerequisite. This is a list price shown for US customers; negotiated terms may differ, and the page does not say how many Objects a given close would need.

SAP’s documentation describes packaging rather than prices for the AI features:

  • The orchestration and accruals agents may require additional entitlements and authorizations, and SAP refers customers to their account executive; the Asset Accounting Anomaly Detection Agent requires a Premium AI license.
  • AI-assisted analytical business insights may require an additional entitlement and authorization.
  • The consolidation agents also note that additional entitlements may be required.

The pages read do not give a price for group reporting, Joule, the finance agents or the Premium AI license, or say how agents or Joule usage are metered.

Known limitations

  • Restricted lifecycle status. Each finance agent in the AI table is listed as Restricted Availability and tied to specific editions and releases. The Data Submission Agent, for example, is available with SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition only. Customers on other editions or earlier releases should not assume access.
  • Scope of automatic resolution. SAP states that the Data Submission Agent’s advanced error analysis is available for nine error codes, and that automatic error resolution is currently supported for two error types: one when the user provides the correct subitem value, and one when the invalid value is in the Profit Center field.
  • Input constraints for accruals. The accruals handbook must be a PDF of no more than five expense categories, and a second upload during processing overwrites the first.
  • Data restrictions. SAP instructs users not to share personal, confidential or sensitive data with the Financial Closing Orchestration Agent. For review booklet insights, SAP states that the data shown is sent to a large language model and that users must not include personal data.
  • Data use and retention. SAP advises users to verify Joule’s output before relying on it, and states that submitted data may be used, with personal data anonymized, to improve Joule. SAP states that Joule interaction data is retained for one year by default, which customers can change through a support request. For customers that opt in to conversation-log storage, which the global account administrator can choose by giving consent, SAP gives a default retention period of 365 days, which can also be changed.
  • Regions. Joule runs in a listed set of data centers, by region and infrastructure provider, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform and SAP’s own Converge Cloud. Whether the finance agents follow the same list was not stated in the pages read.
  • Behavior that changes. Joule is updated automatically when capabilities change, and the Data Submission Agent learns from past resolutions.

CoE analysis

SAP’s close agents raise the questions the approved close pieces ask of any AI built into a finance platform: what the feature does to the record, who authorized it, and what evidence supports its output.

  • An accrual proposal is an unsupported entry until finance supports it. The Accounting Accruals Agent calculates proposals from a policy handbook and historical data, and a user posts them. Posting works as a control when the poster can see the policy rule applied, the history used and the calculation, and could catch a wrong interpretation. See Treat AI Output Like an Unsupported Journal Entry and Review Is a Control Only When It Can Catch the Error.
  • The handbook becomes part of the control environment. If the agent reads accounting policy from an uploaded handbook, the handbook needs an owner, version control and approval, much like any other policy document that drives entries.
  • An agent that submits consolidation data is acting for the company. In SAP’s illustrative example, the Data Submission Agent submits data to the group reporting database in an update run and offers a resolution that creates missing master data. Who may confirm, under what limits, and how the company would later show those limits held are authorization questions. See Your AI Agent Is an Unlisted Signer.
  • Orchestration spreads responsibility. The orchestration agent passes requests to other agents and leaves input validation to them. A finance team should map which agent actually performs each step and which role authorized it.
  • Assurance coverage is a question, not an assumption. Advanced Financial Closing documents dual control and an audit trail for close tasks. Whether SAP provides assurance reports that cover the Joule agents, their models and their release changes is not addressed in the pages read. Internal Control Over Generative AI, Applied to the Close explains why that matters for management’s own control evidence.
  • Generated commentary on group results is a claim. Review booklet insights summarize consolidated figures in natural language. Commentary that reaches a board pack or a filing needs the same support as a chart; see A Chart Is a Claim.

This analysis does not rank SAP against other vendors, and suitability depends on the organization’s own processes, edition and controls.

Relevant diligence questions

  1. Which Joule capabilities and finance agents are active in our tenant, which need us to activate them, and how will we learn when an automatic update changes their behavior or the model behind them?
  2. For each agent we would use, what can it do without a human decision (posting entries, writing consolidation data, creating master data), and which role in our organization can change those limits?
  3. Does SAP provide service organization control or other assurance reports for the services we use; if so, do they cover Joule, the finance agents and the third-party models they use, and for which period?
  4. What does "Restricted Availability" mean contractually for our edition and release, and what support and change commitments apply?
  5. What entitlements, licenses or usage units do the agents and AI-assisted insights need, how is usage measured and billed, and how many Objects would our Advanced Financial Closing use?
  6. What evidence does each agent retain for an output (handbook version, source data, calculation, user confirmation), which subprocessors handle that data, and can we export it for our auditors within our retention settings?

Evidence gaps and unanswered questions

  • The documentation read does not define "Restricted Availability" for the Finance Agents.
  • SAP’s pages read publish a price for Advanced Financial Closing only. They publish no price, metering unit or license content for group reporting, Joule, the finance agents or the Premium AI license.
  • Whether the Advanced Financial Closing price varies by country was not established; the figure was read for the United States.
  • The documentation read does not state which models SAP’s own finance agents use, or whether customer data from these agents is used to improve them beyond SAP’s general Joule statement.
  • The Advanced Financial Closing documentation read for this profile does not describe AI features in that product.
  • SAP’s subprocessor lists sit behind an SAP Support Portal login and were not read; which list covers Joule and the finance agents was not established.
  • SAP’s trust and compliance pages on certifications and attestations, including any that cover Joule, were not read for this profile.
  • SAP’s product page lists two BlackLine-branded reconciliation and close products alongside Advanced Financial Closing; they were not assessed here, and BlackLine’s own products are covered in a separate profile.
  • SAP’s analyst recognitions and customer stories were not assessed.
  • No independent study of outcomes from these agents was found.

Questions to ask

For this offering

  • Which Joule capabilities and finance agents are active in our tenant, which need us to activate them, and how will we learn when an automatic update changes their behavior or the model behind them?
  • For each agent we would use, what can it do without a human decision (posting entries, writing consolidation data, creating master data), and which role in our organization can change those limits?
  • Does SAP provide service organization control or other assurance reports for the services we use; if so, do they cover Joule, the finance agents and the third-party models they use, and for which period?
  • What does Restricted Availability mean contractually for our edition and release, and what support and change commitments apply?
  • What entitlements, licenses or usage units do the agents and AI-assisted insights need, how is usage measured and billed, and how many Objects would our Advanced Financial Closing use?
  • What evidence does each agent retain for an output (handbook version, source data, calculation, user confirmation), which subprocessors handle that data, and can we export it for our auditors?

From the diligence question set

  1. DQ-04 Which AI features are in the modules and edition we license, or would license, and is each generally available, in preview or beta, a paid add-on, or limited by edition or region?
  2. DQ-05 Which AI features are switched on by default, which does an administrator have to enable, and can each be switched off on its own?
  3. DQ-06 Does each feature suggest or act? Can it create, post, approve or change records, and where is that limit enforced?
  4. DQ-07 Who can change each feature's configuration, prompts, thresholds, data connections or model: your company, our administrators or individual users? Can we restrict and log those changes?
  5. DQ-08 What will change in these features through your releases, how much notice will we get, and can we test or defer a change before it reaches our production environment?
  6. DQ-12 Does the feature learn from our data, including corrections and overrides, and how does it detect and handle changes in our business?
  7. DQ-13 What does the system record for each AI output or action, and can we export and keep those records for as long as we need them?
  8. DQ-16 Is our data, including inputs, outputs, documents and corrections, used to train or improve any model, yours or a third party's? Is that off by default, and is the commitment in the contract?
  9. DQ-17 How long are prompts, outputs and logs kept, where are they stored and processed, and can we have them deleted?
  10. DQ-28 For journal entries: can the feature draft, create or post entries, under whose identity are they recorded, and do approval workflow and segregation of duties apply to them as they do to manual entries?
  11. DQ-29 For intercompany and consolidation: does the feature propose or apply eliminations, reclassifications or consolidating adjustments, and are they traceable to both counterparties and reviewed like other adjustments?

Questions to ask

For this offering

  • Which of Winston Match, Winston Screen, Winston Interview and SuccessFactors AI applicant matching will be switched on for our requisitions, and which plan or Joule Premium package and AI Unit consumption does each require?
  • Has SAP or SmartRecruiters had Winston Match or Winston Screen audited for adverse impact, and can we see the full report, including the data, dates and groups tested?
  • In a fully automated Winston Screen setup, can a candidate be dropped from consideration without a recruiter seeing them, and how are the weights and knockout questions that drive the ranking logged when someone changes them?
  • What does Winston Interview evaluate in a conversational screening interview, does it score or infer anything beyond the answers given, and how can a candidate request an accessible format or an alternative?
  • Can we export match scores, screening outcomes and the explanations behind them by requisition and stage so we can monitor selection rates ourselves?
  • Will SAP commit in the contract to audit cooperation, documentation of intended use and limits, and record retention to our legal period for these features?

From the diligence question set

  1. DQ-37 Has an independent auditor tested this tool for adverse impact, on data like ours? Can we see the full results: the groups tested and excluded, the data and its dates, the thresholds used, and the auditor's relationship to you?
  2. DQ-38 Can we monitor adverse impact on our own applicant flow, by job and by stage, and export the data to do it?
  3. DQ-39 What evidence shows that the tool measures something related to the job, and was it validated for the way we will use it: as a pass-or-fail screen, or to rank people?
  4. DQ-40 Which settings change who passes: weights, thresholds, knockout questions, cut scores? Who can change them, are changes logged, and does a change trigger a new audit?
  5. DQ-41 What notices, explanations and alternative processes does the tool support, and can a person with authority review and change an adverse decision?
  6. DQ-42 How can a candidate with a disability take the assessment in an accessible format or request an alternative, and does speed, voice, video or a timed task affect the score?
  7. DQ-43 Does any feature infer emotion, personality or other traits from face, voice or video, or use biometric data? Can each such feature be switched off?
  8. DQ-44 What will you commit to in the contract to support our obligations: audit cooperation, documentation of intended use and limits, notice support, records, and cooperation if a decision is challenged?
